Time, and What's Outside Your Control
Two categories of ranking factor that don't respond to effort at all — one because it simply takes time, the other because it was never yours to control in the first place.
Takes time, can't be rushed
Domain age, backlink history, content depth, review history — all direct ranking factors, but ones that only build through elapsed time, not effort alone.
Completely outside your control
Google's algorithm, update timing, competitor decisions, real search demand, and physical distance.
Why this matters
The customer’s side
An established-feeling business with years of visible history and reviews simply reads as more trustworthy than a brand-new one, even if the newer business is doing everything else right — and none of the factors on the right are things a customer ever thinks about directly either.
The search engine’s side
Genuine ranking factors — just not ones effort can shortcut
Domain age, backlink history, content depth, and review history are all genuine, direct ranking factors — but ones no amount of effort this month can shortcut. There's no fix beyond starting now, since every month delayed is a month a patient competitor pulls further ahead. Google's algorithm, update timing, competitor decisions, real search demand, and physical distance genuinely affect your ranking too — but none of them are things you can act on. This applies equally to every agency you're competing against, including whoever's ahead of you now.
