Backlinks

Other websites linking to yours — for example, a local news site linking to your agency when quoting you on a market update.

Why this matters

The customer’s side

Not usually seen directly, but the effect is felt indirectly — a business that's genuinely been featured and linked to elsewhere feels more established and credible than one that's only ever findable through its own website.

The search engine’s side

Direct — one of the longest-standing ranking factors there is

Each genuine link is directly factored into your ranking as a vote of confidence — widely regarded by SEO practitioners as one of the oldest, strongest signals that exists.

How to check yours

Method 1 — Your own site, via Search Console

free, and shows every link Google currently knows about, with no cap.

  1. 1.Go to Google Search Console and select your property.
  2. 2.Click “Links” in the sidebar.
  3. 3.Review the “Top linking sites” and “Top linked pages” lists.

Method 2 — A competitor, via Ahrefs

free, but capped around 100 visible links — still enough to see roughly who's linking to them, and where your own list compares.

  1. 1.Go to Ahrefs' free backlink checker.
  2. 2.Enter a competitor's website address.
  3. 3.Review the list of linking sites, and note any you could realistically approach yourself.

How to fix what you find

Local news and press

offer yourself as a source for local market commentary — reporters need a quote for property stories regularly, and most will link to your site when they use one.

  1. 1.Find local journalists who cover property or business on your regional news site.
  2. 2.Email a short, genuinely useful comment on a current local story — average sold prices, a market shift you're seeing, anything you can back up.
  3. 3.Ask to be credited with a link back to your site, not just your name.

Original local data

publish something genuinely useful that other sites will want to reference — a downloadable sold-price report for your town, updated quarterly, is a common one that works.

  1. 1.Pull real, free sold-price data from the Land Registry for your area.
  2. 2.Turn it into a simple page or report — average price, price change, days on market.
  3. 3.Share it directly with local news sites and community groups as something worth linking to.

Community sponsorship

sponsoring a local sports team, school event, or charity usually earns a genuine link from their own website's “sponsors” page — often for a modest cost.

Genuine local partners

mortgage brokers, solicitors, and removal companies you already refer clients to will often link back if you ask directly, especially if you link to them too — real reciprocal relationships, not a link exchange scheme.

Directories and associations

list your business properly on legitimate, relevant directories — your local Chamber of Commerce, Propertymark, or a local business association — most include a link back as standard.

Keeping on top of it

Ongoing, month after month

Earning one link is the easy part — doing this steadily, month after month, is the actual work. This is ongoing, not a task with an end date.
